Esterbrook Bakelite Desk Set wit...

#119
Bruce & Eileen Drake

Richard Esterbrook immigrated from Cornwall in 1856 because he saw a business opportunity of manufacturing steel pens in the United States. He achieved great success with The Steel Pen Manufacturing Company, which at its height had 450 workers producing 600,000 pens a day, and was the largest pen manufacturer in the United States. Because there were no people trained in the pen trade here, and no suitable machinery, it was necessary to design and build all machines. Quality and versatility were key factors in Esterbook’s success; his long-lasting steel pens came in many different versions to fit varied writing styles.
